A renewed plea for clues
Thursday, January 31, 2008 - 04:03 PM
The Toronto Children’s Aid Society, a pediatrician and the caregivers of a missing five-year-old girl joined investigators in a renewed effort for clues in the case of Alanna Livas, who was allegedly abducted by her parents last year.
During a news conference today, Phillip Howe, director of the Toronto Children’s Aid Society’s Scarborough Branch, expressed concern for Livas’ health since she was allegedly abducted by her parents last November. Livas, who suffers from rickets, a softening of the bones, had an “optimistic” chance of recovering from her condition while in the care of her aunt and uncle before she was taken, said Howe.
“According to her doctors, she had about a two-month storehouse of vitamins in her body, which protected her from further damage from her disease,” said Howe. “She’s now been missing for two months and we’re very worried about her medical condition.”
Jean Chin, Alanna’s aunt, and her fiancé, Derek, have been taking care of the child since her natural parents, Peter and Vivienne Livas, were arrested for allegedly running a grow-op in May. Livas’ parents have since been let out on bail.
Alanna was in the care of her aunt when she disappeared during a scheduled visit with her parents.
“It breaks my heart to think of her in pain,” Chin told reporters.
“We miss her very much and hope that someone out there is watching this and can help us bring her home.”
Det. Cathy Powell said the girl’s parents may be driving a light-blue 1998 GMC Jimmy SUV.
“We are very concerned about this child’s medical condition,” said Powell. “If you have any information regarding her whereabouts or her parents, we urge you to contact 41 Division in Scarborough, Crime Stoppers, or your local police station.”
