Recent Toronto tragedy serves to remind that all children deserve respect www.wellandtribune.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=1151704 The tragic death of Katelynn Sampson is already becoming yesterday's news. We have already heard the all too familiar litany of excuses from individuals and agencies who supposedly are mandated to protect our children and they have failed once again. In fact, we were warned, by Ontario's ombudsman, that such a tragedy would most likely happen again without the ombudsman's powers extended to the investigation of child care agencies, especially children's aid societies. But we have all failed our children as a society that repeatedly shows its neglect and abuse of its most vulnerable while hypocritically claiming that these same children are our most valuable resource; but then we have had a lot of practice because we have treated our elderly the same way. For too long now, children in need have been at the mercy of a system more often dedicated to justifying and preserving their own selfish interests rather than those of the child. All of our children deserve respect and reverence for the unique souls and special gifts that they are to all of us, as Kahlil Gibran told us when he wrote: "Children come through us but not from us."
