I had a talk with a couple of the Sarnia Firemen the other day.
these two fine men brought to my attention some very disturbing information.
(NFTA)- The National Fire Protection Association issued the standard sets of minimum criteria for for the staffing of fire fighter crews ,and how they respond and operate at emergency scenes.
oh ya the kicker is this was issued in 2001.
The NFTA requirements are
(1)Fire Fighters will respond with a minimum of 4 personnel on each apparatus. In 2006 our Fire Fighters are working with only 3 men per apparatus. this is a very real safety concern for the Sarnia Firemen.
(2) Fire Fighters will arrive at the emergency scene with in 4 minutes of the dispatch center receiving the call.
in 2006 we had certain council member that suggested that we close one of our Fire halls
In 2003 the city was given $170 some odd thousand dollars to go to the up keep of Sarnia Fire Fighters apparatus last year the entire ax-cell fell of one of the fire trucks. when the department asked city hall about the funds they where told that it was placed in a city reserve slush fund for emergency's.
NFTA gives every city a Class Ratting that was put together by the
(Insurer's Advisory Organization) (IAO) Inc.
The ratings are from Class 1 being the best to 9, class 9 represents protection rated at little or no value in controlling serious fire in commercial buildings.
the Rating for our City of Sarina in 1991 was listed as a a class 4 by (IAO) Inc. Standards.
Class 4, Smaller cities with less resources find achievement of a superior level of protection more difficult .
In 2006 with the growth of Sarnia the (IAO) Inc. says that Since the Sarnia Fire Fighter are Norw the first response team to the chemical Vally we should be rated at a class 3 level.
Class 3. represents a level of superior protection that cities are expected to achieve. Municipalities in class 3 should be able to effectively control most fires and confine the worst from becoming severe conflagations.
well in 2006 do to down sizing Sarnia has reached a class 5
Class 5. represents a less level of protection for a Municpalities with a Carreer fire department . but is a very respectable grading for a volunteer department.
now I know that some of the incumbents will say!
( but it will increase our property taxes)
But the truth is we are paying for it anyways in our Insurance policy's. this is a proven fact.
As some of you know I was a professional security expert with ADT security. we were trained in hows and why your policies were put together this was a main selling point.
E.G you have a monitored smoke alarm your insurance is cheaper. Well if we supported our fire men we would have more protection and this mean the city Insurance cost goes down.
while I'm on this we need to have our life guards on patrol at our beaches and crossing guards at our cross walks.
feel free to correct me on this subject if you feel I'm wrong
