CHILD PROTECTION Ms. Andrea Horwath (Hamilton East): I have over 1,100 petitions here that are asking for the Ombudsman’s oversight of children’s aid societies, and they read as follows: “To the Legislative Assembly of Ontario: “We, the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as follows: “Whereas Ontario is one of the few provinces that does not have independent oversight of child welfare administration; and “Whereas eight provinces now have independent oversight of child welfare issues, including child protection; and “Whereas all provincial Ombudsmen first identified child protection as a priority issue in 1986 and still Ontario does not allow the Ombudsman to investigate people’s complaints about children’s aid societies’ decisions; and “Whereas people wronged by CAS decisions concerning placement, access, custody or care are not allowed to appeal those decisions to the Ontario Ombudsman’s office; “Therefore, be it resolved that we support the Ombudsman having the power to probe decisions and investigate complaints concerning the province’s children’s aid societies (CAS).” Of course I agree with this petition. I have signed it and, on behalf of over 1,100 residents of this province, I submit these petitions to the Legislature. Go here to this link and get your own going and get your area to sign them we need many more right across Ontario! www.ontla.on.ca/web/go2.jsp?Page=/getting-involved/petitions&menuItem=getting_involved_petition&locale=enAgain Thank you for your help and support getting this message out to all Ontarians
