Dear Dean,
Here we go again. Yet another disgraceful indictment of Dalton McGuinty's leadership from one of the highest-level independent officials in the province. This time it's Ontario Auditor General Jim McCarter in his report on the McGuinty government's political slush fund which doled out more than $32 million in grants to sports and cultural groups, some with ties to the Liberals.
The Auditor General said:
"We had a number of grants where there wasn't even documentation as to what they wanted to money for."
"We found that the decision-making processes followed with respect to the... year-end grants were not open, transparent or accountable."
The report also cites the involvement of Greg Sorbara's Ministry of Finance.
"(Spending controls on the grants were among) the worst we've ever seen."

Today's newspaper editorials and columnists say:
"McCarter's report is a devastating rebuke not just of (Citizenship Minister Mike) Colle and the program but of McGuinty's competence and judgment. While the premier wouldn't dare call a public inquiry into this mess, voters will deliver their verdict Oct. 10. It should be a harsh one." - London Free Press
"Make no mistake. With just over two months to go before the Ontario election, Premier Dalton McGuinty today is caught in a scandal reminiscent of the AdScam affair that brought down the federal Liberals last year... (The Auditor General's) report shows there was little else but political direction involved in the awarding of grants, since Colle and his staff personally decided who got what. Groups without those ministerial connections didn't even know about the program, much less how to apply... Colle resigned yesterday, but that's almost irrelevant." - London Free Press
"Why didn't McGuinty fire Colle then instead of stonewalling demands for his minister's head for three weeks in the Legislature and suggesting his critics were racists? McGuinty ducked that question in a press conference yesterday..." - Toronto Star
"But however much Premier Dalton McGuinty may wish it were otherwise, the scandal surrounding his government's 'slush fund' cannot be pinned solely on Mr. Colle. Rather, it reflects a government culture sorely lacking in accountability... Only when it became clear that his refusal to commission a report would harm his party heading into this fall's election campaign did Mr. McGuinty relent." - Globe & Mail
John Tory says the McGuinty slush fund scandal is yet another example rampant waste and misspending by McGuinty's government and a violation of taxpayer trust.
