Parents warned to watch for whooping cough NICK PATCH Toronto parents have been warned to watch for symptoms of whooping cough after a significant increase in the number of reported cases last year. In 2006, 669 cases of the illness were reported to Toronto Public Health, up from only 178 cases in 2005. Dr. Michael Finkelstein, associate medical officer of health, attributes the spike to an increase in awareness of the illness and to more sensitive testing procedures. Symptoms of the illness, which is most common in children, include runny nose and a gradually worsening cough that may lead to loss of breath or vomiting. A vaccine is available, although it can wear off after a few years. Antibiotics can reduce the risk of transmission to others and, if started early, can also relieve the symptoms.
