The way I see it, people will only hold you down so that they can feel good about themselves. Usually the people that do this, believe that they are better than everyone else. Of course, they very rarely truly believe that they are better than everyone else. These people are usually quite aware of their own shortcomings. They're phonies. They're usually weak, self-absorbed, and cowardly. You might recognize these traits in your typical bully.
What they need to justify their positions, is someone or something that they can objectify and target. They need victims. They rationalize their strategies and tactics in the most insane of ways, and they intimidate others by offering that they will victimize anyone and everyone that stands in their way. In short, they're certifiable headcases.
How do you fight these kinds of people?
For starters, you have to stand up to them. Intimidation is only effective if the target of the intimidation is actually intimidated. When the bully sees that his/her victim is not intimidated, the bully will usually become more aggressive. Usually they'll use words like, "You ain't seen nothing yet."
Unfortunately for the victims, it's quite often true that they haven't seen anything yet. The typical bully will anything and everything in his/her power to prove that he/she is in control. Usually to their own detriment. And in some cases, it's often best to call the bully on their bluff and force him/her to lose his/her cool. Ya see, there is one thing that the bully fears more than looking weak. And that's looking like a fool.
This is where it gets interesting. The bully often becomes so arrogant that he/she firmly believes in his/her own invincibility. They believe that they will always be strong. This means that the bully will often make careless and serious mistakes and miscalculations.
It's best to make the bully appear weak in front of others by making the bully look like a fool. The bully will do everything in his/her power to prevent you from doing this. Fortunately for the victim, the bully is seldom the brightest bulb on the tree. It is also fortunate for the victim that the aggressor will have many other enemies.
The first thing the victim needs to do is realize that the situation is not hopeless. The victim also needs to realize that the bully will employ myriad tricks and illusions to make the victim's situation appear hopeless. Remember, only bullies like other bullies. And even among bullies, there is a pecking order. And the lowest bullies in that pecking order are often victims themselves.
The next thing that the victim has to do is to reestablish the rules. You cannot win if you're playing on the bully's terms. You must seize the initiative and change the game. If the bully believes that he has the upperhand by coming after you, move uphill. It is bad strategy to chase an enemy uphill. If the bully follows, he/she is setting themselves up for defeat.
High ground is sacred ground. You will never lose on high ground. Thus, the truth is a worthy adversary of those who have covered "all of the angles." There is no effective way of covering the truth in a game of facts.
As is always importnat in any battle, speed is of utmost important. Once the initiative has been seized, it must be maintained. Never look back, and never concern yourself with how far behind your adversary is. Just know that he/she is behind and that every you stop to look, the enemy gains on you.
Damn the torpedoes... Full speed ahead. To hell with the consequences.
