Mr O'brian publicly compared the homeless problem to the pigeon problem. What a piece of garbage. He is the prime example of what i speak of so often here. The guy is a pedofile and here he compares the homeless problem to the pigeon problem? Psychologists call that self projection. When you have something to hide or your ashamed of yourself for something.... like maybe I don't know...picking up underage prostitutes? Explains why he trashes homeless people so often? You upper-class should be proud of this yutz. What pisses me off even more, that while I was at city hall today I seen O'brian standing around with other people and they were making comments like "Well said" or "At least someone is saying it." Man.... What a piece of garbage.... what a piece of garbage. But at least the truth comes out. These people don't want to help the poor. They care nuthing about anyone but themselves... I am going to try to finish H40 sooner. That just right inspired me.... His business's systems are being added to the list. So any information regarding this jerk's businesses please send me a p.m. I will look on my own. But the more information the better the job I can do. I know he is involved in the tech sector, My specialty. Too bad cowards like that don't have the balls to say to our faces. Rest assured I am going to give him the opportunity. The rich problem could be compared to the cockroach problem Ottawa Rooms has..... Just don't matter how many you step on or how many you kill, they just keep coming back and ruining the world around them. I really don't think Ottawa should be the capital any more. It has no right... It could not lead Canada threw a wet paper bag. I think Calgary should be the capital. Where people work hard for their money. The richest province in Canada. Ontario keeps wining that Alberta should share their money... Ottawa is worse then the crackheads out front of the Salvation army, Bumming change for crack. You want money Ottawa .... WORK FOR IT!!! You lazy slobs. Making a living off of your of your poor while you insult them is pathetic. Ottawa is the welfare bum province of Canada. They are supposed to lead the rest of Canada.. yeah they are leading us... right off a cliff.

Mayor Larry O'Brien City of Ottawa
Dear Mr. O'Brien:
I am appalled by the comments made by you last Thursday on the radio show "Madely in the Morning". Some of your comments were: "We've got to stop feeding the pigeons (referring to panhandlers) in the Byward Market, and we did that with real pigeons about 25 or 30 years ago, and low and behold, you barely ever see a pigeon around here. You start doing that with the panhandlers...and they'll stop hanging around here."
Panhandlers are poor people and vulnerable and they deserve respect like anyone else. Putting down the panhandlers in this fashion does not help to serve a purpose at all but humiliates them instead. Judging them is not going to solve the social issues of why panhandling exists. Where is their dignity and human rights? Right next to the Ottawa City Hall is the Human Rights Monument sitting on the corner of Lisgar and Elgin Streets. With all due respect, I suggest that you take a good look at it and see what is represents.
Unveiled by the Dalai Lama in 1990, this monument to human rights leaves a strong impression with both its message and design. The red granite and grey concrete of the 10-metre-high monument carries the words "equality," "dignity" and "rights" in 68 of Canada's First Nations languages. Walk through the tribute along a "symbolic procession," starting under the massive plaque inscribed with the first words of the Declaration of Human Rights: "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights."
The panhandlers are our marginalized people in our affluent society which often have their needs disregarded by all levels of governments.
Panhandlers need more affordable housing rather than sleeping in over crowded and rundown emergency shelters. They need more addiction programs for substance abuse, more counselling services, higher welfare and disability benefit rates, more community and social programs and the list goes on and on.
Every panhandler has their own personal story and often it is a tragic and sad story. Some has lot their jobs, their families, their houses, and most of all their self esteem and lack of self worth in our society. Many in our society look down upon the panhandlers and talk about them badly and treat them badly also. The panhandlers need compassion and caring and need to be understood, listened to and given the appropriate services they need to improve their lives.
Canada is a just society and where we treasure our civil and human rights. Every Canadian no matter what their position in life, what their economic status is. they should be treated with respect.
I believe that the panhandling issue needs to be addressed appropriately and with a panel of people who have been panhandlers in the past, who are presently panhandlers and other agencies involved to think of healthy and creative ways to understand why there are so many panhandlers on our Ottawa streets today.
Nothing is gained by berating anyone or anything, I deem it to be uncivil and lacking of human rights.
Bring some panhandlers to lunch or go to the soup kitchens and missions and speak to them. Ask them what they need to improve their lives and what is lacking in their lives now and as ask them why they are on the street, what brought them there and you would be surprised at their answers. Every person would have a different story. Every story needs to be validated. Every person deserves that. Many of these panhandlers lack proper nutrition, sleeping accommodations, housing, health care, social networks, lack of understanding the government red tape to help them go through the maze of governments programs.
Many of these panhandlers deal with their problems either with alcohol or street drugs or psychiatric drugs. Some of these panhandlers have gone through rehab and some have not. Some have been in psychiatric hospitals. Some of these panhandlers were victims of abuse either in their childhood or teenage years or domestic abuse. Some could not handle a regular job for whatever reasons. Some of the panhandlers have all different sorts of disabilities i.e. learning disability, psychiatric disability etc.
Some of these panhandlers are in poor physical shape due to lack of good nutrition and proper health care they may require but do not know how to access. Some have lost their SIN cards, OHIIP cards, do not know how to access and apply for social programs like subsidized housing, welfare and disability pensions, EI and other pension plans and drug plans.
There are no easy solutions to a complex problem like the panhandling issue. Arresting these people is oppressive in my opinion and does not constitute a fair resolution of the panhandling issues arising in our city of Ottawa today.
How do I know all this, because I have talked to many people and have advocated for many people during the past 20 years. I do not get paid for my job as an activist. I do not have all the answers.
I do hope that the office of the Mayor and the City of Ottawa take a responsible attitude and look into the panhandling situation with fairness, real solutions, and give hope to our most vulnerable people in Ottawa. The panhandlers deserve that.
I await your reply to this email.
Sincerely,
Sue Clark-Wittenberg Advocate, Ottawa 613-721-1833

What he said was very insulting. Comparing the poor people next to garbage and piegons? I wonder if he will have his own calling some day he will go broke. What goes around will always comes back to the person who makes insults.
No wonder that CAS thinks the same as proverty is a bad thing, and removes children out of homes because they think what parents are doing are garbage and thinks children needs or deserved better. It is true that children deserve better life, but you cannot take out Love of a Family, espeically if they are "poor".

Wow... those are such intelligent words. The pigeon problem did not go away they moved to the high rise apartment buildings and are shitting on everyone's balcony.. etc etc... the problem did not go away it just moved...
Out of all the dumb people I have been forced to be around, crackheads, lister bums, police officers social workers... O'Brian, his personalty and the stuff he says and how he acts has got to take the cake.
