ACTION ALERT! FAX/EMAIL/WRITE/PHONE the TDSB School Trustees
Access to Education Without Fear
By csfortier -07/28/2006
Greetings Friends,
After Kimberly and Gerald Lizano-Sossa were ripped from their schools in April of this year by immigration authorities, students, teachers and community groups mobilized at the Toronto District School Board to demand a Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy in the schools. In May 2006 this campaign was victorious when the TDSB passed a full Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy to be implemented for the start of the 06/07 school year. In addition, the policy will make schools a sanctuary zone meaning that all staff and teachers at schools will be directed that if immigration agents come to the schools asking for information or students that they will be refused access and directed to the Director of the TDSB at 5050 Yonge Street.
HOWEVER - the policy has yet to be implemented! We are calling on all supporters of this policy to immediately contact school trustees and demand that they implement this policy before the school year begins in September!
We have attached a sample letter, along with the emails and contact information for all the trustees. We are asking that you send your email/letter/fax to all trustees to ensure that they all receive the same amount of pressure to get back to work and make sure this policy is implement before September 06 school year. Please edit or personalize the letter as you see fit (especially if you are a high school student or teacher)
-------------------------------------------------------
To Whom It May Concern:
My name is (name) and I am (occupation/student). I am writing to urge the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) to act immediately to ensure the full implementation of a comprehensive Don't Ask, Don't Tell/ Access without Fear policy in all the city's schools.
I believe that the inclusive nature of your decision to include the input from other community-based groups will no doubt allow for ethnic-minority communities to contribute and voice their various concerns, hence rendering widespread support for the policy. Also, in realizing the difficulty in actually writing up such a policy I feel that the inclusion of community organizations is critical to ensuring the effectiveness and long-lasting success of the Access Without Fear/ Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Policy.
* I am not sure that this issue was resolved but I thought it interesting reading.
